Dr. Paul Calleja

Director of Research Computing, Cambridge University

Dr Paul Calleja is the Director of RCS, where he provides research computing services across all academic disciplines. Dr.Calleja obtained his Ph.D. in computational biophysics at Bath University. After filling a post-doctoral research position at Birkbeck College, he moved into private industry, where he spearheaded early commercialization of HPC cluster solutions within the U.K.

Following six years in the commercial sector, where he led the market transition from proprietary SMP systems to commodity cluster-based solutions, Dr. Calleja returned to academia to lead the formation of a new HPC service at Imperial College, London. From there, he moved to Cambridge University, to form a new HPC service and to direct a major reorganization that has resulted in University-wide HPC capabilities with a novel pay per use cloud computing model. Cambridge University now boasts the fastest academic supercomputer in the UK. Dr.Calleja sits on numerous national and international HPC committees and advisory boards, as well as being a founding member of the UK HPC Special Interest Group.

Martin is an HPC professional with a broad knowledge of applications, workloads and software tools that run on large-scale computer systems. Managing the HPC benchmarking team at AMD, translating workloads into designs for future hardware architectures and getting that message across to various stakeholders
Martin speciality spans performance analysis and optimization of large-scale big data and scientific applications using parallel algorithms and development of tools to enable NUMA support for memory intensive workloads and profiling tools to measure the parallel efficiency of applications.

Dr. Omar El Agnaf

Executive Director, Qatar Biomedical Research Institute QBRI

Dr. El-Agnaf is considered a pioneer in the field of Parkinson’s and related neurodegenerative diseases, was awarded his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1997 at the Queen’s University Belfast, UK. From 1997 to 1999, he worked as a post-doctoral scientist at the School of Biology and Biochemistry, Queen’s University Belfast. Following this, Dr. El-Agnaf undertook an additional two-year post-doctoral position at St. George’s Medical School in London. After completing his Research Fellowship in 2004, Dr. El-Agnaf joined the College of Medicine at UAE University and was appointed to the Biochemistry Department. In September 2014, he joined HBKU at Qatar Foundation, and in 2016 he was appointed Acting Executive Director of Qatar Biomedical Research Institute and became the Executive Director in 2018.

As Executive Director of Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, Dr. El-Agnaf has successfully directed his organization’s efforts towards translational research to improve and transform healthcare through innovations in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting Qatar and the region. Under his leadership, QBRI has realized significant achievements. From securing extramural research funding to establishing robust alliances with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to winning the 2017 Arab Best Research Institution of the Year Award.
